How to Block Popups

Are you really sick of Pop Ups?

We are too. We have an answer.

What is it?

We've implemented a system that will close popups as soon as they open. The junk content won't even load, the little popup windows will just be closed. This is done automatically and without any need to install any extra software. It just works.

How much?

This is a free service to all of our dialup customers.

What about popups that I want?

Only pop ups that are found to popup advertisements are blocked. We don't block popups that you'll want. We block junk, not the good stuff.

Who is this for?

This is for all of our customers who use our dialup service. Those people that use 816-224-1111 for their dialup number already have this, as well as Micro.Com Dialup Accelerator, activated without any need to change anything in their setup. Enjoy!

But I'm a dialup customer, I hate popups, but I don't call that number!

You can configure your web browser to take advange of this service by configuring our web server as a proxy server. In Internet Explorer, open Tools, then Options, then click the Connections tab. In the white box, highlight your dialup connection (possibly Micro.Com or My Connection). Click Settings on the right hand side. That will open a new window. In the middle section of that new window there will be a section called "Proxy Server". Check use a proxy server. Set the Address blank to be www.micro.com. Set the Port to be 3128. Click "OK" on that window and then "OK" again on the "Internet Options" window behind it.

Now you'll connect to the Internet normally, and start up your Internet Explorer. You'll be prompted for a username and password to login to "Micro.Com Dialup Accelerator and Popup Blocker". Enter your username (the first part of your @micro.com email address without the "@micro.com") and password that you use for service at Micro.Com. So if your email address is "myusername@micro.com" your username would be "myusername". Check Save this password in your password list so you won't have to enter these values again.

That's it. Now you'll be surfing faster and blocking popups while you are at it.

You missed one! I got a popup I didn't want!

Send us and email including a link to the webpage that you got a popup on that you didn't want. If we get it too and we also don't like it, we'll add it to the block list.

I'm a Micro.Com customer, but not a dialup customer, and I hate popups. Can I use this service?

No. It will likely slow down your connection. This is for dialup customers only.

  1. If you are a business that has one of KC Micro's Linux servers installed in your office and want to get rid of popups, then contact KC Micro and we'll talk about what we can do.
  2. If you are a business that does not have one of KC Micro's Linux servers, then you'll need to upgrade to a Linux server to qualify. Please contact KC Micro if you wish to do this.
  3. Contact your Internet Provider (Time Warner, Comcast, SBC, etc...) and see if they offer a no-popups solution.

After I login to Micro.Com Dialup Accelerator and Popup blocker I get an immediate "Page Cannot Be Displayed". I'm running Internet Explorer 6.0

After applying SP1 to Internet Explorer 6.0 (configured to use the Proxy server), the password box appears normally. After authentication a "Page cannot be displayed" message appears. Clicking the browser refresh/reload button refreshes the page and beyond that everything works as usual

November 16 Update: Microsoft Knowledge base article Q331906

Microsoft has released a patch for the IE6(SP1) problem, but although patch q331906.exe has been released, Microsoft is requesting that affected customers contact them directly to obtain the patch rather than releasing it on their web site. They may make it available for download after more testing. We have copied the file to a local server at: patch file for your convenience, but suggest you install it ONLY if you are affected by this problem, and follow Microsoft's advice.
