Dialup Internet Setup Instructions

This instruction sheet will guide you through configuring Windows 95/98 to dial-up and connect to Micro.Com Specialists' Dialup Internet Service.

This guide is separated into the following steps:

  1. Installing Dial-Up Networking
  2. Installing the TCP/IP Protocol
  3. Checking TCP/IP Settings
  4. Creating an icon and shortcut for Micro.Com
  5. Dialing and connecting
Step 1: Installing Dial-Up Networking
  1. Open the "Control Panel" by clicking the "Start" button, then pointing to "Settings" and clicking on "Control Panel".
  2. Double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon.
  3. At the top of the "Add/Remove Programs Properties" window, click the tab that says "Windows Setup".
  4. In the box in the middle of the window, highlight the line that says "Communications" by clicking on it once.
  5. Click the button that says "Details...".
  6. If there is already a checkmark next to "Dial-Up Networking", do nothing else. If not, click the little box to the left of "Dial-Up Networking" to put a checkmark in it.
  7. Click "OK" in the "Add/Remove Programs Properties" window. Windows will prompt you for a disk or CD-ROM if it needs it.
  8. Depending on your setup, Windows may want to reboot at this point. If so, go ahead. Either way, you should find yourself back at the "Control Panel".

Step 2: Installing the TCP/IP Protocol

  1. In the "Control Panel", double-click on the "Network" icon.
    IMPORTANT NOTE: If there is already an entry that reads either just "TCP/IP" or "Dial-Up Adapter -> TCP/IP", CLICK "CANCEL" IN THE "NETWORK" WINDOW AND SKIP IMMEDIATELY TO "STEP 3: CHECKING TCP/IP SETTINGS".
  2. In the "Network" window, click on the button that says "Add...".
  3. In the "Select Network Component Type" window, click "Protocol", then click "Add...".
  4. In the "Select Network Protocol" window, find and click on "Microsoft" under the "Manufacturers" list.
  5. Find and click on "TCP/IP" under the "Network Protocols" list.
  6. Click "OK" in the "Select Network Protocol" window.
  7. Change "Primary Network Logon" to read "Windows Logon" if it does not already say this.
  8. Click "OK" in the "Network" window.
  9. Windows will prompt you for a disk or CD-ROM if it needs it. Click "Yes" to reboot in the "System Settings Change" box.
    IMPORTANT: If you are prompted for a username and password after rebooting, LEAVE THE PASSWORD BLANK. If you do not, Windows will ask for a username and password every time the computer is rebooted.

Step 3: Checking TCP/IP Settings

  1. Click on either just "TCP/IP" or "Dial-Up Adapter -> TCP/IP".
  2. Click on Properties.
  3. The first tab that comes up is the IP address tab. Make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" is marked in.
  4. Click on the Gateway tab.
  5. There should be NO numbers in the bottom box. If there is, click on the number then click Remove.
  6. Click on the DNS Configuration Tab
  7. Disable DNS should be marked in.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Click OK again.
  10. Your computer may want to restart. If it does, say Yes to restart and then start on Step 4 when the machine comes back up.

Step 4: Creating an Icon and Shortcut for Micro.Com Specialists

  1. If the "Control Panel" is still open, you may close it by clicking on the "X" in the upper-right corner.
  2. Click the "Start" button, then point to "Programs", then point to "Accessories", then click on "Dial-Up Networking".
  3. If this is the first time "Dial-Up Networking" has been opened, the "Make New Connection" window will open automatically. If not, double-click on "Make New Connection".
  4. In the "Make New Connection" window, name the new connection "Micro.Com Specialists".
  5. Check to make sure that your modem is correctly listed under "Select a modem". If not, correct the listing.
  6. Click "Next".
  7. In the boxes labeled "Area code" and "Telephone Number", enter the area code and telephone number of a Micro.Com Nationwide Dialup in your area.
      If you do not remember the closest dialup in your area, have a friend that is connected to the Internet go to http://www.micro.com/dialups.html and search for the area code or state that you are in.
  8. Click "Next".
  9. Click "Finish".
  10. Right click on the "Micro.Com Specialists" icon, then click on Properties.
  11. Click on either the Server Types tab or button depending on which Windows 95/98 version you have. There will only be a button or a tab, not both.
  12. WINDOWS 98: The top dialogue box should read "PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98".
  13. WINDOWS 95: The top dialogue box should read "PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet".
  14. Under Advanced Options, only "Enable software compression" should be checked.
  15. Under Allowed Network Options, only "TCP/IP" should be checked.
  16. Click TCP/IP Settings.
  17. "Server Assigned IP Address" should be checked.
  18. "Server Assigned Name Server Address" should be checked.
  19. The two other options at the bottom should be checked.
  20. Click OK.
  21. Click OK again.
  22. Right-click on the "Micro.Com Specialists" icon, then click on "Create Shortcut".
  23. In the "Shortcut" window, click "Yes".
  24. In the "Dial-Up Networking" window, click "X" in the upper-right corner to close it.
  25. Right-click on the "Shortcut to Micro.Com Specialists" icon on your desktop and click "Rename".
  26. Type "Dial Micro.Com Specialists" and press Enter.

Step 5: Dialing and connecting

  1. To dial-up to the Internet, double-click the "Dial Micro.Com Specialists" icon on your desktop.
  2. Verify that your username is correct (yourusername@micro.vbs.net).
  3. Verify that your password is correct.
  4. Verify there is a checkmark in the box next to "Save Password".
  5. Click "Connect".
  6. Depending on your setup, Windows will either (1) open a "Connected to Micro.Com Specialists" window, which you can minimize, or (2) automatically minimize to an icon on the right side of the "Start bar" that looks like two small computers whose screens blink. When this occurs, simply start up your Internet application (i.e. Eudora, Netscape, Explorer, etc.)

TO DISCONNECT: Open the "Connected to Micro.Com Specialists" window by clicking its icon on the "Start bar" and click "Disconnect". If the "Connect" window opens again, simply click "Cancel" to close it.
