Micro.Com Web Page Uploading: Installing WS_FTP
| Previous: Downloading WS_FTP | Main Index | Next: Logging into the server |
You now must install WS_FTP on your computer - this will copy the program files to an appropriate location and create icons for you. This step will vary greatly from platform to platform. Basically, all you want to do is take all the default settings and install the program. Be sure to read the Special Note below!
|
Special note: This is WS FTP Limited Edition. This is licensed to be used only by home users, students, and goverment organizations. During setup it will confirm you are one of these things on the honor system. For instance, if you claim to be an "other" and use it "at work" for "consulting" then it will not allow you to continue setup and direct you to download the commercial edition. You must use this program for personal use and claim to be a government worker at work, a student at work/home/school, or an "other" at home to continue setup. Please be honest. |
The window shown at right will open, asking what the installation program is
supposed to do. You want to install a new copy of WS_FTP, so click Continue.
|
The license agreement comes up after the program has verified your
authorization to use this program under the limited license. See the
Special Note above for more information.
Read through the license agreement if you are interested
in that sort of thing. When you're done, click Accept.
|
The WS_FTP installation program wants to know where to install the program.
Unless you have a reason to change the default, just click OK.
|
WS_FTP wants to know what directory to put downloaded files in by default. Since
you won't be using WS_FTP to download, this isn't important. Click OK.
|
WS_FTP needs to know what version of itself to install. This is where it makes
a difference whether you are using Window95 or Windows 3.1. If you are in
Windows95, you have two choices that will work for you. This tutorial supposes
that you choose the 4 window version. Make your choice(s) and click OK.
|
WS_FTP now wants to know your email address, since most anonymous FTP sites ask
for it when you download files from them. Again, since you won't be using WS_FTP
for downloads, this isn't important. Click OK.
|
The installation program needs to know what group to put the WS_FTP icons in.
The default is usually acceptable, though you can change it if you'd like.
When you've made your choice, click OK.
|
The installation is complete. Click OK to end the installation.
|
Now that WS_FTP is installed, you don't need the "ws_ftple.exe" file that you downloaded any more. Click and drag it to the Recycle Bin to delete it.
