Micro.Com Web Page Uploading: Troubleshooting

Previous: Verifying the upload Main Index Next: None

Below is a list of problems that seem to crop up a lot concerning WWW areas at Micro.Com, along with their solutions. Each one can be reached by clicking on the link below, or simply scrolling down.

My main page doesn't come up when I go to my site, all I get is this wierd list of files. How do I make my main page come up automatically?

When you go to a site using Netscape or Explorer (or any WWW browser), you don't usually supply a file name. For instance, suppose you type in http://www.micro.com in your favorite browser and expect to see a page. You didn't supply a filename, so the server has to guess at what you meant.

Traditionally, WWW servers look for a file named "index.html" and send that. www.micro.com is no exception to this. Note that the four letter extension ("html") is important - with Windows 3.1 system this may require uploading the file, then renaming it (since MS-DOS doesn't support four letter extentions). Also note the case of the name. The server expects to see this filename all in lowercase (see the question about broken pages/graphics for an explanation).

Some of my files/graphics won't load - I get either a little broken picture icon or a "Sorry I can't find this resource" message. What's wrong?

There are three things that could be happening here:

I can't login to the server - I see a "530 Login incorrect" message in the little window. What am I doing wrong?

Several things could be keeping you from logging in. They are:

I'm trying to upload a file, and it looked like it worked, but the little window at the bottom says "452 Error writing file: Quota exceeded".

The reason for this message is simple - you've tried to use more space on the server than your account will allow. Files need to be erased before new ones can be uploaded.

If you get this message and you believe it is an error, write me email at webmaster@micro.com or give us a call at 866-377-5212.

I got my pages uploaded, but my FTP link to www.micro.com doesn't work.

Let me guess: Netscape says "User anonymous access denied." Right? Many of our users have had this problem. Offering files for download via FTP from www.micro.com is not allowed. This feature was deliberately disabled because it is a tremendous security risk on the server. We did not feel that the advantage of offering anonymous file downloading outweighed the hassle of having to guard against potential break-ins and software piracy.

This does not mean that files cannot be downloaded from your WWW area on www.micro.com! Instead of linking the file as ftp://www.micro.com/~username/filename, simply link it as http://www.micro.com/~username/filename. When someone wants to download it using Netscape (rather than view it), they simply right-click the link and select "Save this link as...".
