Micro.Com Web Page Uploading: Uploading your files

Previous: Logging into the server Main Index Next: Securing your files

Now that you're connected to the WWW server, you can send your files to your WWW area.

Change directory input box The first thing you should notice is that the screen is divided into two halves - the left displaying the contents of the current local directory and the right displaying the contents of the current remote directory. The current local directory is most likely wrong. You must change to the directory where your WWW files are stored on your hard drive.

Click Chdir button on the left side. The box shown to the right will open. Type the name of the directory your webpages are stored in and click OK. In this example, my files are in "\Webpages".

Your remote directory should be correct. You can make sure by clicking Chdir button on the right side of the window and typing public_html.

NOTE that if you are maintaining a virtual domain, you will see an additional subdirectory when you first login. This subdirectory is named "cgi-bin" and is for CGI scripts used by your pages. If you don't know what CGI scripts are, just leave the directory alone. The public_html directory listed in your home directory is where you want to upload your files to. Though files for virtual domains are actually stored elsewhere on the server, this has been made invisible to you.

Transfer status box Once the correct directories are selected on either end, highlight the files you want to transfer and click Upload arrow button. As the files are sent, the box shown to the left will open and show the progress. For small files - especially text files - this box may flash by too fast to read.

When the upload is complete, WS_FTP will automatically update the listing of files on the right side of the screen.

All that is left at this point is to secure the files and disconnect correctly.
